The Dark Night of the Ego

The initiation passage that dismantles the false self so the soul can come back online

Many people refer to this experience as the Dark Night of the Soul, but the more I move through these thresholds myself ~ and witness others walking them ~ the more it feels accurate to call it the Dark Night of the Ego (as I’ve recently heard it referred to as).

Because in this sacred passage, the soul is not dying.

It is the identities, belief systems, coping patterns, and long-held roles of the ego that begin to crack, expose their fault lines ~ they start to disintegrate and fall apart.

This is not a mistake, nor a punishment, or failure.

This is initiation.

Although things may be departing, they portals of upheaval are not here to break you ~

they exist to return you to yourself.

The Dark Night, the void, the liminal thresholds… are pressurized passages designed to dismantle the structures that once held your life together, so that something truer, deeper, and more aligned can come online.

The psyche feels like it’s losing control.

The ego feels like it’s dying.

But the soul knows this is realignment of the highest kind.

When the old self can no longer hold who you are becoming

The Dark Night often arrives as a period of intense unraveling.

It can feel like:

  • loss of identity

  • loss of direction

  • loss of meaning

  • loss of control

  • loss of the life you thought you would have

Sometimes it feels like everything you once relied on disappears at the same time.

Relationships shift. Work changes. Beliefs no longer fit. Motivation disappears.

What used to make sense… doesn’t anymore.

It can feel like attending your own funeral ~ the death of who you thought you were, and the death of the life you thought you would live.

Grief, confusion, fear, and raw emotion may surface in waves that feel bigger than anything you’ve ever experienced.

And in those moments, it can truly feel like you are dying.

In a way, something is.

But it is not your soul.

What is dying are the structures that could no longer hold the fullness of who you are becoming.

The cocoon phase ~ when nothing feels solid

There is a stage in this process that feels like falling into the void.

Nothing feels certain. Nothing feels stable. Nothing feels like it makes sense anymore.

This is the cocoon phase. The phase of primordial goo.

The place where the old form has dissolved, but the new form has not yet taken shape.

You may feel stripped down to nothing.

Raw.

Bare.

Exposed.

Your nervous system may feel like it has lost its reference points, with nothing to grab ahold of for safety or stability.

This is the liminal space ~ the in-between world where transformation happens. And although it can feel lonely, it is not empty. It is a reorganization.

Your consciousness is learning to exist without the old structures, so it can reorganize itself into a higher order.

You are not alone in the unseen

During these passages, we often remember something we forgot when life felt predictable.

We are not doing this alone.

These thresholds invite us to reconnect with Spirit ~ with the unseen intelligence that exists beyond the logic mind.

Call it Guides, Ancestors, Higher Self, Soul Family.. Call it the greater field of consciousness.

Whatever language you use, the support is real.

We have a Dream Team in the Unseen who literally exist on our behalf. This is the time to ask for help.

Ask for clarity.

Ask for strength.

Ask to be shown the highest path forward.

Offer your fears, your grief, and your uncertainty as sacred material to be transformed.

Express Gratitude and Love, even when you don’t understand what is happening.

Because something deeper than the thinking mind is guiding this process.

Your soul has a GPS. You’re very own internal guidance system.

And even when you can’t see the road ahead… It ALWAYS knows the way. **Oftentimes, we just need to get out of our own way first!**

Grief as the great transformer

Famous intuitive leader and trance channeler Lee Harris calls grief the Great Transformer, and the Dark Night often opens the door to the full spectrum of emotion.

Loss, pain, confusion, anger, sadness, vulnerability.

These feelings are not signs that something has gone wrong. They are signs that something real is happening.

When the old identity dissolves, the nervous system must learn how to exist without the familiar reference points it once depended on.

This can feel chaotic. But chaos is often the beginning of creation. Destruction and Creation are just one in the same.

As with every great awakening, there is an equally great unraveling. And as with every death, there is the possibility of rebirth.

Big deaths… make room for big rebirths.

The Grail Quest ~ the archetype of the Dark Night

In many ancient stories, the hero must pass through a period of darkness before they are ready to hold the Grail.

The Grail Knight leaves the familiar world, enters the forest, faces trials, loses certainty, confronts shadow, and walks through the battlefield of the wasteland.

Only after the illusions fall away does the Chalice become visible.

The Dark Night mirrors this archetypal journey of the Dark Knight who reclaims his throne. When inner purity and Divine light are restored he is crowned Grail King (or Queen!).

It is the passage where the ego must surrender its need for control, so the deeper intelligence of the soul can take the lead.

The Grail is not something you find outside yourself, it is what you become when the false structures fall away.

The crown is not given to the one who never struggled. It is given to the one who walked through the darkness without turning back.

You are not being punished. You are being reorganized.

The Dark Night is not here to destroy you.

It is here to burn down the systems that could not hold the whole of who you are becoming.

It asks you to stop forcing. Stop chasing. Stop trying to prove.

It asks you to remember your inherent worth and wild innocence without needing external validation.

Slowly… but surely… your life force begins to come back online.

You begin to move from alignment instead of fear. From truth instead of conditioning. From inner knowing instead of outside expectation.

This is where intuition sharpens. Where faith is tested.

Where you learn to trust yourself even when there is no evidence of where you are headed.

This is where the soul comes forward.

These passages are not here to break you, it is where you Become YOU!

If you find yourself in a Dark Night right now, please remember:

You are not broken, nor failing. You are not going backwards.

You are being reshaped.

Like carbon under pressure becoming diamond, the density is being compressed so the light can come through more clearly.

The void is not empty.

It is clearing space. It is removing what was never truly you, so the radiant, sovereign intelligence of your heart can return.

These initiation passages are not here to break you, they exist to return you to yourself.

And at certain thresholds along this path, there are guardians who appear to help break the illusion even further.

Some come with wisdom. Some come with silence. And some even come in laughing.

One of those guardians is known as the Heyoka.
